What is Botox®/Dysport®?

Botox® and Dysport® are injectable treatments used to treat “dynamic” lines in the forehead and brow areas. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by reflexive, repetitive daily expressions that etch themselves into your skin over time.

Botox® has been around for a number of years and is used to treat a variety of conditions. As early as the 1960s, botulinum toxin type A (the clinical name for Botox®) was FDA approved for use in treating crossed eyes. By the late 1980s and into the 90s, it was found to be an effective treatment for everything from eye spasms to excessive sweating. However, the discovery of Botox® for cosmetic use was stumbled upon accidentally in the early 90s, when an ophthalmologist noticed that her patients being treated for eye spasms with Botox® were also exhibiting smoother foreheads. Once word got out of its anti-aging properties, use of Botox® skyrocketed, and there was actually a shortage for a period of time because of its popularity.

Today, Botox® is still the number one nonsurgical procedure in the U.S., with over 5 million treatments performed per year. In 2009, a Botox® competitor entered the market – Dysport®. Made from the same toxin as Botox®, Dysport® offers similar results, with some very minor differences.

What Areas do Botox® and Dysport® Treat?

Although Botox® is approved for several medical uses, Botox® and Dysport® for cosmetic use can address:

  • Glabellar lines (frown lines between brows)
  • Forehead lines
  • Crows Feet (around eye)
  • Chin dimpling
  • Upper Lip
  • Neck Lines

How Does Botox Work?

Botox® and Dysport® contain botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that is found in nature. Neurotoxins target the nervous system, and when injected into lines and wrinkles in extremely small doses, they block the signaling process between the neurons that activate dynamic expressions.

For muscles in your body to be able to contract, your nerves release acetylcholine – a chemical messenger (or neurotransmitter) that is found at the junction where muscle cells meet nerve endings. When acetylcholine attaches to the muscle cell receptors, it signals the muscles to contract.

When you get an injection of Botox® and Dysport® in your forehead or brow area, they work by preventing the release of acetylcholine, which relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic expressions. By preventing the contraction of these muscles, your forehead wrinkles and frown lines are greatly diminished.

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dysport®?

The differences between Botox® and Dysport® are minor, and include:

  • Onset – it takes two to five days to start to see the effects of Dysport®, versus four to seven days for Botox®. For both botulinums, it required two weeks for full effect.
  • Duration – Botox® tends to last longer than Dysport®, although this has not been scientifically proven yet. Botox® and Dysport® typically last between three to four months.
  • Amount – Dysport® and Botox® are measured in units. The number of Dysport® units needed to equal the number of Botox® units is roughly 2.5-3 units: 1 unit of Botox®. Therefore, more Dysport® units are needed to get the same effect of Botox®. This can be quite confusing.
  • Pricing – Because one needs 2.5-3 times more Dysport® units than Botox® units, the price of a Dysport® unit is much less than a Botox® unit. This means that your treatment cost will be roughly the same, regardless of which product you use.

At AMA Med Spa, we understand that every patient has different needs and goals, so when you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Gulcher or her aesthetic nurse injection specialist will help you decide which treatment is right for you.

How Many Botox Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments is completely at your discretion. Botox® and Dysport® work almost immediately and last at least three months. Once the injection has worn off, you will need another treatment to extend your results. If you are diligent with your injections, not only will you see a reduction in the existing lines on your face, but you will also notice fewer new lines forming. This is because consistent use of Botox® or Dysport® can “train” the muscles to stay relaxed, keeping dynamic wrinkles at bay.
